Extractions and Bone Grafting

Dental extractions are more common than you might think.

While we do our very best to protect and preserve your natural teeth whenever possible, sometimes it is actually best to remove a troubled tooth in order to protect your health. When an extraction becomes necessary, we do so comfortably and with great results so you can heal and get back on the road to good oral health.

When a Tooth Extraction Becomes Necessary

It is hard to say goodbye to a natural tooth, but if it is seriously infected, broken, or causing you pain and a restoration will not solve the problem, we will be there for you every step of the way by providing pain-free extractions and tooth replacement options, when necessary.

Some situations that may require a tooth extraction include:

  • A tooth that is broken at the gum line
  • An unsuccessful root canal
  • Serious infection
  • Significant bone loss
  • A broken root
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Overcrowding

When you care for your extraction site properly, you may be surprised how quickly it heals. We provide specific post-surgical care instructions based on your individual case, giving you the best chance for a speedy recovery for your smile.

Some guidelines include:

  • Avoid chewing on your surgical site.
  • Don’t smoke cigarettes or drink beverages through a straw – the sucking action can dislodge the healing tissue.
  • Keep the area clean and maintain your oral hygiene.
  • Come back for your follow-up exam.

In cases of bone loss, we can often provide bone grafting at the same extraction appointment so you can have dental implants. This can also allow us to preserve bone structure support for your surrounding teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Family & Implant Dental, we completely understand that losing a tooth can feel like a traumatic experience. You will probably have concerns about eating and speaking once your tooth has been extracted. Most of all, you are probably concerned with how you will look. It makes sense because your smile is your calling card and one of the first things people notice about you.

We don’t just remove your tooth and then abandon you! We offer a wide variety of tooth replacement options and give our patients choices when it comes to their dental treatment.

Here are some ways you can complete your smile:

Dental implants – This is most effective way to replace a missing tooth. An implant mimics the root of your tooth and integrates with your bone to provide unsurpassed stability and function. You will have no dietary restrictions once your treatment is complete.

Fixed dental bridge – This works well for patients who have a missing tooth and want additional options. We use your adjacent teeth to secure an artificial tooth in place. A dental bridge will keep your remaining teeth from shifting; however, unlike dental implants, it will not prevent bone lass and requires some dietary restrictions.

Partial and complete dentures – We offer custom dentures to replace multiple missing teeth. We also offer implant-retained dentures for your convenience.

Bone Grafting Treatment

When you suffer from an infection or tooth loss, you may also lose valuable jawbone.

If you want a tooth-replacement option such as dental implants, we need to have enough bone structure for support. If your bone has been compromised, we offer bone grafts to assist with rebuilding the foundation that supports your teeth as well as your facial structure.

Using donor bone, your own bone, artificial bone, or bone from a bovine source, we can replace the bone you have lost. We may even be able to do this at your extraction appointment, eliminating the need for another surgery.

Once we place the donor bone, we cover the area and allow time for it to integrate with your jawbone. The result is more stability, greater function, more tooth replacement options, and the preservation of your appearance.
